Chicana/o and Chicano Studies departments often emphasize the importance of creating a supportive, inclusive, and empowering environment for their students. These resources are designed to help students navigate their academic journey while also building community. Here are some resources (on and off campus) and strategies that can help undergraduate students be successful in their Chicana/o Studies programs:
Academic Advising and Mentorship
- Advising Services: To schedule an appointment with a Chicana/o Studies academic advisor, schedule an appointment through Loboachieve. Services are available through individually scheduled appointment or attending weekly drop-in hours. Visit our Advisement tab for more instructions.
- Faculty Mentorship: Many Chicana/o Studies faculty offer mentorship to students. This can help students with academic guidance, career advice, and personal development. Faculty members often have extensive knowledge about the subject and can provide invaluable insights into the field and how it intersects with other disciplines. Cultural Centers and Student Organizations
Cultural CentersEl Centro de la Raza: El Centro de la Raza will positively impact the transition, retention, and graduation of students through an engaging environment built on academic, cultural, personal, and professional activities. Financial Support and Scholarships Scholarships/Fellowships for Chicana/o Studies Students:
There are several state Grants and Scholarships are available to New Mexico residents to help pay for college. Visit the New Mexico Higher Education Department website to view all that is available to students.
The New Mexico Opportunity Scholarship is open to all New Mexico residents that want to peruse a college degree.
You are eligible if you meet the following requirements:
- You are a New Mexico resident.
- You enroll in a New Mexico public college or university.
- You enroll in at least six credit hours but not more than 18 credit hours. Courses must be credit bearing.
- You maintain a 2.5 GPA while enrolled in a college or university.
That's it! If you meet the requirements and enroll you'll receive the Opportunity Scholarship.
The New Mexico Lottery Scholarship is open to all recent New Mexico resident high school graduates and covers 100% of tuition. You are eligible if you meet the following requirements:
- Enroll full time at a New Mexico public college or university the semester following graduation or completion of a certificate.
- You maintain a 2.5 GPA while enrolled in a college or university.
That's it! If you meet the requirements and enroll you'll receive the Lottery Scholarship.

UNM Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship
The fundamental objective of MMUF is to address the problem of underrepresentation in the academy at the level of college and university faculties. This goal can be achieved both by increasing the number of students from underrepresented minority groups who pursue PhDs and by supporting the pursuit of PhDs by students who may not come from traditional minority groups but have otherwise demonstrated a commitment to the goals of MMUF.

Mental Health and Wellness Services
Health and Counseling Services: UNM offers counseling and mental health services to help students manage stress, anxiety, or personal challenges that can arise during their academic careers. SHAC provides counseling services to all UNM Students who are facing with excessive stress or difficult personal problems, psychological and psychiatric support may be helpful or necessary. SHAC also provides medical services such as women's and men health check, immunization, physical therapy, lab and x-ray tests. Any UNM student, regardless of documentation status can access these services.SHAC Counseling

- UNM Mental Health Collaborative (MHC)
MHC is partnered with the Accessibility Resource Center, El Centro de la Raza, and the Women’s Resource Center, the Mental Health Collaborative (MHC) aims to increase students’ access to mental health resources through free, trauma-responsive, culturally, and linguistically informed counseling services. Our mission is to provide safe and inclusive mental health care to all, regardless of gender identity, sex, race, ability status, age, sexual orientation, economic class, or religious affiliation.

Conferences and Academic Events
- Conferences: Our department participates annually in the National Association of Chicana and Chicano Studies Conference (NACCS) This conference takes place each Spring semester with submissions accepted in the Fall semester. If you are interested in attending or presenting at conferences, contact a professor you may be working with in CCS.
- Workshops and Events: CCS offers regular workshops, lectures, and seminars to address contemporary issues, new research, or trends in Chicana/o Studies. Visit our Events website page or social media platforms to see upcoming events.
