Dr. LM García y Griego Travels to FranceDr. LM García y Griego was invited by the Université Stendhal – Grenoble 3 to serve on a doctoral committee and to make a presentation on September 16, 2015 as part of their seminar on migration and borders.

The dissertation defense, for which he was a member of the committee, reviewed Lucie Genay’s doctoral dissertation on the consequences for the New Mexico population, especially its nuevomexicanos, of the establishment of the Manhattan Project at Los Álamos and of the growth of the military industrial program associated with nuclear weapons at Sandía, Kirtland, White Sands Missile Range, and uranium mining in the Grants area in the post-war period.  The student, who had been an exchange student at UNM in 2009, passed the exam with distinction.

The presentation, part of Dr. García’s on-going work on the history of New Mexico land grants,  compared the post 1848 land loss and land recovery outcomes of two sets of Spanish land grants in New Mexico:  the Pueblos and the nuevomexicano community Mercedes.
